Norwalk police are reporting that a young black bear was spotted on Thursday, May 23, in the East Rocks Road area, where he seems to be having fun exploring.
The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Wildlife Division (DEEP) were notified in both cases.
"Black bears are becoming increasingly common in Connecticut," the department said. "In order to safely co-exist, residents are reminded to take precautions to prevent negative encounters with bears and nuisance behavior."
DEEP officials offer the following tips:
- Do remove birdfeeders and bird food from late March through November.
- Do eliminate food attractants by placing garbage cans inside a garage or shed. Add ammonia to trash to make it unpalatable.
- D0 clean and store grills in a garage or shed after use. (Propane cylinders should be stored outside.)
- Don't intentionally feed bears. Bears that become accustomed to finding food near your home may become "problem" bears.
- Don'tapproach or try to get closer to a bear to get a photo or video.
- Don't leave pet food outside overnight.
- Don't add meat or sweets to a compost pile.
